6m-long python killed by villagers

TEMERLOH: An Indonesian stumbled upon a 6m-long python while looking for bamboo shoot along the edge of Sungai Pahang near Kampung Bangau Parit, here recently.

Villagers said the man, known only as Wak, was shocked when he saw the reptile on Monday at about 5.30pm. Wak, in his mid 40s, fled and alerted the villagers.

What a catch: Villagers holding the dead python.

The python, said to weigh about 67kg, was hatching dozens of eggs in a nest.

Villagers tried to catch the python but decided to shoot it after it turned aggressive.

One of the villagers, Tajudin Mohd Zain, 52, said the discovery of the python put to rest the mysterious disappearance of three goats reared at the village since February.

“We believe the python had killed and ate the goats as its nest was just about 100m away from the goats’ pen.

“The last goat went missing some time late last month,” he said, adding that they found about 50 eggs in the nest with a few already hatched.

“We fear for the safety of villagers, especially children who tend to play near the river bank.

“The nest and the eggs were destroyed as they could pose a threat to the safety of villagers and livestock,” said Tajudin.

Thank you for your interest in Austin Stevens' work and for sending him this link.

Austin was very sad to see yet another example of the ignorance of the general public towards reptiles. What a waste of a harmless and magnificent snake!
